Peace For Old Ghosts…”The Late Light”.
By now it’s an often repeated fact, if not a cliche, that Lockdown allowed many creative people the time and luxury to work on projects that they otherwise wouldn't have found the time to fit into their lives. This is very much true for this collection of songs, which at one point was destined to gather digital dust on a hard-drive somewhere and remain unheard by anyone but myself. Given that I was unable to work at my day job, I began looking around for projects I could use to fill my time creatively, and decided that this batch of songs from 2019 had enough of a thread running through them to put them together as a release.
While I don’t often analyse the lyrical content of my own songs too hard, there seems to be a theme of questioning the role of things that I have relied on as constants in my life as I get older. Does love really mean the same thing as it used to, or is it best remembered as scattered snapshots from a golden summer? Does the pursuit of those fleeting moments of pleasure, those small explosions, now dictate the shape of my life when they used to be a mere outline? The stony road used to feel solid underfoot, but is it now an icy stretch leading to an empty home full of spiders and lingering light?
During this period I was also helping finish “Diving Bell’, the latest album by Modern Hinterland, as well as co-writing and recording “Come Home” by Laura Lamn, both of which gave me a fresh drive to see what songs of my own needed finishing. “The Late Light” is magical realism, an attempt to straddle the dividing line between the waking world and the dream state in an effort to make some kind of sense of my own existence.
1. I’ve lost my way, this road is unsafe.
2. Knowing where you are is a good place to start.
3. I wandered around by the shoreline.
4. I can smell it on the clothes I’m wearing.
5. Chasing your tail and digging for bones.
6. Should do me some good.
